Jalen Brunson's Unexpected Emmys Debut with Host Mariska Hargitay

The 78th Emmy Awards are fast approaching, and new details have emerged about exciting segments viewers can anticipate. New York Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson is scheduled to participate in a pre-recorded segment at the telecast's opening. Additionally, Reba McEntire is slated to deliver a musical tribute to the late Dolly Parton.

These new announcements complement previously revealed special features, including a "Charlie's Angels" 50th-anniversary reunion with Jaclyn Smith, Cheryl Ladd, and Kate Jackson. A "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" 30th-anniversary tribute will also feature Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz. Other planned performances include Noah Kahan's rendition of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" for the In Memoriam segment, and Julianna Margulies presenting the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award to Michael J. Fox.

Given that New York Knicks enthusiast Mariska Hargitay is hosting the Emmys, there has been considerable speculation regarding the team's presence, particularly her friend Brunson. Hargitay herself had previously indicated in interviews her desire for the Knicks to be represented at the event. She also recently confirmed that Brunson would guest-star on "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit," stating, "It's definitely happening. He's kind of magnificent that way. He is just open and ready. I don't think there is much Jalen can't do." While executive producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay remained elusive when questioned about Brunson's appearance during the Emmys media day, hinting at Hargitay's extensive network, sources suggest Brunson will appear in a pre-taped number at the show's beginning. Hargitay will then seamlessly transition into a live continuation of the performance with dancers before delivering her opening monologue. Later in the evening, Sally Field, who co-starred with Parton in the 1989 film "Steel Magnolias" and is an Emmy nominee herself, will introduce McEntire's tribute to Parton. McEntire and Parton shared a long-standing friendship, including a musical collaboration on a reinterpretation of McEntire's hit song "Does He Love You" in 2021.
